Kai Tak River Green Art Festival 2012
Since the renaming of the Kai Tak Nullah on 30th September, 2007, by Community Alliance of Kai Tak development, it has transformed from an acknowledgement of a concept, a rediscovery of urban ecology, to a ‘community- based’ spatial planning. It reaffirms the possibility to combine community education with active learning experience; after 5 years of development and distillation, it has vividly demonstrated the interactivity and proactive synergy generated by the ‘initiated-by-the-public-and - coordinated-by-the-government’ advocacy model.
From the water purification to the ecological green corridor; from the revitalization of the community to the environment education, the ‘Kai Tak River’ symbolized the sustainable vitality of the grassroot community, and has embodied the local spirit of cultural diversity and inclusiveness. In between the natural flow of river and artificial exploitation, the trace of the ‘Kai Tak River’ development has compressed a hundred years of vicissitudes, from a natural bay, league of 13 villages, the WWII aircraft shelter, factory culture, creative communities to ecological restoration, it has enriched the historical resources in our humanity environment and has induced an opportunity for active learning.
With the support of Environmental Campaign Committee and the Environment and Conservation Fund, the Urban Place Research Unit of the School of Architecture of the Chinese University of Hong Kong has lined up various community representatives, tertiary institutions, cultural groups, green organization and 17 primary and secondary schools in the neighborhood. In 2011-2012, many overseas and local artists, environmental protection experts and educators were invited to give workshops of various scope and nature to encourage the teachers and students to explore the possibility of using the environmental education to supplement school curriculum, and through the process of producing environmental art, using the Kai Tak River as the common vehicle, to provoke the community and schools to participate and transform the surroundings, to construct a humanistic landscape of active learning that is integrated with natural ecologies.
After months of effort, the environmental art works, performances, workshop and guide cultural tour created by the environmental artists, teachers and students will finally take place at the end of June, titled ‘E.Co Habitat’ and ‘Is/not Kai-tak river a metaphor?’, on the banks of the Kai Tak River and at 1a Space in the Cattle Depot Artist Village. It hopes to advance the humanistic values of ‘Design Together, Build Together, Enjoy Together’ via direct interaction with the community and to materialize the possibility of constructing a humanistic co-habitat of social environment.
