A native and undergraduate at Hong Kong University, Hakwan Lau went to Oxford as Rhodes scholar to study the brain and consciousness using fMRI and TMS. Now at Columbia University, Lau is known for his work on how conscious choices and decisions are made, particularly in the pre-frontal cortex, and on the neuroscience of conscious vision. He has put forth a theory of consciousness based on Bayesian decision theory and how the brain deals with noisy signals.
