Special MDes Workshop: High/Low Light & Materials Design Workshop: Translating low-tech manufacturing & artisan processes into high-design lighting

Instructors: Dan Gottlieb & Penny Herscovitch, Art Center College of Design

The High/Low Lighting Design workshop explores the fusion of high-design with low-tech manufacturing in the production of an ingenious light. The workshop provides an opportunity for students to integrate traditional and/or every-day manufacturing processes around Hong Kong and Shenzhen with the region's high tech lighting industry, to develop lit materials. Students will begin with hands-on investigations, combining LEDs and other light sources with diverse materials – both natural materials from the region and goods from local artisans and manufacturers. Based on these explorations, students will innovate and translate low-tech making processes and re-purposed / sustainable materials into a proposal for new family of lights.
