Public Lecture Series: "LEZIONI ITALIANE"

Italy has assumed since the exhibition Italy The New Domestic Landscape in 1972 at the New York MOMA, "the characteristics of a model where a wide range of possibilities, limitations and critical problems of contemporary societies are faced by diverse and sometimes opposite design approaches" as described by its curator Emilio Ambasz at that time. The present state of design activity in Italy, its relation to the industry and its development as well as the growing interest for social design and/or crafts 2.0 is resumed through three designers talks by, Odo Fioravanti, Giulio Vinaccia and Emmanuel Babled, moderated by Philippe Casens.

About the Speakers

Odo Fioravanti

Odo Fioravanti studied Industrial Design at the Design Department of the Milan Polytechnic. Since 1998, he has worked as an industrial designer, as well as experimenting graphic and exhibition design, with a firm will to melt different design areas into a continuous matter. Since he has created Odo Fioravanti Design Studio in 2006, he has developed projects for many companies, notably Abet Laminati, Ballarini, Casamania, COOP, Desalto, Flou, Fontana Arte, Foscarini, Land Rover, Normann Copenhagen, Olivetti, Palomar, Pedrali, Pircher, Toshiba, Vibram, Victorinox and won the Compasso d’Oro Prize ADI with the Frida wooden chair by Pedrali in 2011. He taught and lectured in many design schools and academies: Milan Polytechnic, University of Venice, San Marino University, Istituto Marangoni, Domus Academy, HEAD Genève.

Giulio Vinaccia

Giulio Vinaccia worked for twenty years as a product designer for important Italian brands such as Brembo, Ferrari Spa Piaggio Spa, Momo Design, Ducati, Aprilia, New Max Spa, Data Process, Moschino and Borsalino. Today, after working in more than 22 countries, he is an expert in ‘social design oriented’ projects, ranging from the identification of cultural heritage, to the design of new lines of products, from the creation of commercial brands, graphic systems and visual identification to their communicative strategies. He is now full time engaged with Social Design Projects as a Senior Consultant for UNIDO and other UN agencies. In 2015, he was awarded with the World Green Design Contribution Award and in 2016, he received the ‘Compasso d’Oro’, the most important international design prize, for his work in Social Design.

Emmanuel Babled

Emmanuel Babled studied Industrial Design at the European Institute of Design in Milan. He has been an invited professor at Domus Academy in Milan and the Design Academy of Eindhoven. His design approach is based on observing materials and techniques in their authentic surroundings and gaining a feeling for places and social condition. Combining his design with craft skills, knowledge and tradition, his work is driven by a creative process using and integrating new technologies. Since 1995 he developed a wide range of projects, limited editions and unique pieces, designed for prestigious manufacturers like Baccarat, Bulgari, Covo, Kundalini, Fontana Arte, Oluce, Rosenthal, Venini and Vistosi as well as for his own brand, the Babled Edition. His design pieces are presented in numerous private collections and Museums worldwide.
