PolyU Design Integrated Capstone Projects 2022

The past decade has brought more unprecedented challenges than ever to the design community. Existing design theories and methods are no longer valid, while the core competencies of designers are being increasingly replaced by technology and further democratised by everyone. While conventional design problems are being handled by non-designers and technology, new types and scales of design problems are emerging.

We believe that this range of problems have become far too complex and large in scale for any one single design discipline to manage. Design methods, therefore, cannot come from any one single design discipline and may need to be radicalised entirely. Team members working together to create new methods are a far more powerful and valuable takeaway than the actual design outcome.

Here, we present seven Integrated Capstone Projects, through which our final-year bachelor students, coming from different design disciplines, encounter new problems, experiment with new processes, and co-create new mindsets.

Dean, School of Design, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Background

In the 2020-21 academic year, Prof. Kun-Pyo Lee, Dean of PolyU School of Design, launched the Integrated Capstone Project (InC) as a project option for all final year students. Students who joined InC (1) worked on inter-disciplinary entrepreneurial projects, under the guidance of a team of tutors from different fields, and (2) learned to strategically design socio-technical and ecological systems.

The InC of 2021-22 is the second trial. We have 28 BA design students coming from six design disciplines (product design, communication design, advertising design, environment and interior design, interactive media, and social design), working on seven projects. The topics students are working on cover complex social, urban, and ecological problems, and include urban reactivation and co-creation, mask recycling and sustainability, air purification and STEAM education, public understanding of SEN children and family, community food scrap collection and soil care, and future work mobility. The projects will be documented as a book and exhibited at the Central Market from late-June to July in 2022.
