SHAH Parth Bharat

  • Parth Shah is a PhD Candidate conducting his doctoral research in measurement of biomechanical properties of soft tissues in the head and face region, at the Asian Ergonomics Design Lab in School of Design. Having completed his baccalaureate and masters in biomedical engineering, he tries to apply his knowledge in biomechanics into product design. His research interest include physical ergonomics, anthropometric studies, digital human modeling, product design, soft tissue biomechanics and ortho-prosthetic design.

About the Research

Head is considered as one of the prime structures of the body as it houses the major sensory organs. Current study helped in developing a pressure sensitivity map of entire head region for healthy Chinese adults. In this study Pressure Discomfort Threshold (PDT) and Pressure Pain Threshold (PPT) were measured along with soft tissue deformation at that instance. In addition, biomechanical parameters like soft tissue thickness, elasticity, deformability were also measured. Measured data finds its applications in product design and testing. Also, it can be used as a reference in various clinical, diagnostic and medical studies.

Research Methodology

Since the study was deterministic in nature, the adopted research approach was inherently positivistic. A within-subjects experimental study was planned to acquire quantitative data. Statistical analysis techniques were used to analyse the acquired data.
