About the Research
The purpose of my PhD project is to investigate how designers use existing knowledge to make actionable their design practice and to determine a framework of design knowledge formation through practice. Understanding the nature of design knowledge generated as a feature outcome of practice and acknowledging the situatedness of factors that lead to its creation is key to the project. This study may reveal a new way for design firms to establish their intellectual agency: a deep operational value beyond the techniques and outcomes for which they might be typically known. Further, the project proceeds with the intention to publish a new framework for design practice that aligns university-based design research and industry-based design practice, to function more cooperatively and with common purpose in the advance of the product design profession.
