Ms. FU Fang

FU Fang Fiona earned her Bachelor of Engineering from the Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and Master of Science from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She joined the Asian Ergonomic Design Lab in School of Design as a PhD candidate in 2017. With the specialization in CAD/CAM and standardization, her research focuses on 3D anthropometry and its ergonomic application in product design.

Research Abstract

Nowadays, various ear-related products, such as earphones, headsets, hearing aids and glasses, are used in our everyday life. Products designed based on anthropometric data can improve the sound quality, physical comfort and fit when used. 3D scanning techniques provide a new access for researchers to study 3D model. However, very few research has focused on 3D anthropometry of external ear especially for Chinese population until now. Hence, the aim of the study is to investigate 3D anthropometry of external ear and provide proper linkage between anthropometry and product design. 

Research Methodology

Mixed methods were applied in the study. Quantitative method was used in data collection and statistical analysis to define the ear classification and create the anthropometric ear models. Qualitative method was used in comfort and fit experiment to seek users' preferences of ear-related product. 


1. Investigate the 3D external ear of Chinese population, including shape classification and anthropometric model creation;

2. Establish the connection between 3D ear shape and fit design for ear-related product.
