City | Script 字城

About City | Script
Hong Kong is a city packed with text. Countless signs in various forms overlap and intersect, weaving a unique cityscape. While these signs are familiar to the public, their nuances often go unnoticed. The aim of this exhibition is to put a spotlight on three calligraphic styles, or scripts, commonly found on Hong Kong signs: LiShu, WeiBeiTi and KaiShu. The written word, not only a medium of communication and a means to recording history and culture, is also a manifestation of aesthetics. Simply by studying the transformation and application of Chinese characters, we can glimpse at changes in society, culture, history, politics, and everyday living. Showcasing physical signs, photography, and original sign artworks, the exhibition explores aesthetics and applications, as well as the historical contexts in which the three calligraphic styles made their ways into the streets.
