Public Lecture on Entrepreneurship and Product Design in Mainland China : Secrets from Inside and Out by Liu Lidan | Upcoming Events

Synopsis of the lecture
The lecture will cover two topics: Brand Shaping Products and Start a Design Consultancy.

Brand Shaping Products
"designaffairs” has provided service for many Chinese companies with a growing success for the past 10 years, while developing systematical approaches for a variety of tasks. Liu Lidan will introduce the approaches and tools of “designaffairs” through case studies, focusing on the design perception by semantic tools, ways of observing and grasping the holistic user experience, and the process of transferring from user research to product design. Liu Lidan will also share her experiences working in the Chinese market, the sparks that came with working along the Chinese design team, and the opportunities and challenges of the Chinese and Asian market under the fast development of customer perception.

Start a Design Consultancy
How to manage design projects successfully? How to maximize resources? How to integrate and manage an international team? How to get my first client? What are the possible difficulties in the first three years of starting an office, and how to overcome them? To rid the anxieties of starting your own business, Liu Lidan will share stories from her own experiences.

About Liu Lidan
Liu Lidan began her study for the Diploma of industrial Design at Essen University, Germany, in the year 2000. One year later, she became an industrial designer at Medion Design Center in Germany. After finishing her study in 2004, Liu returned to Shanghai and founded XLPlusDesign in 2005. XLPlusDesign later merged with Designaffairs Group, where Liu became the managing director of Designaffairs China in 2010. She has since led design teams to receiving more than 45 international design awards, including red dot, iF, Good Design Chicago, etc. She was awarded with Top 10 Young Creative Talents in Shanghai, and was a member on the design jury for the iF Concept Design Award in 2012. In the meantime, Liu has managed Chinese projects for Folkwang University (Germany) during 2009-2010, and has been a lecturer at Tongji University since 2005.

PolyU introduces International Design and Business Management Master Programme to develop “T-shaped” professionals | From the News Room

School of Design of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), Asia’s No.1 of the world’s best 25 design schools, has introduced a new master program in International Design and Business Management to nurture all-rounded “T-shaped” leaders who function in design-sensitive and technologically intensive business environments, cross-pollinate among business units in order to stay innovative and competitive.

Developed in collaboration with the University of Technology, Sydney, Northumbria University, New Castle, and PolyU’s Faculty of Business, the International Design and Business Management (ID&BM) Master in Design program is an interdisciplinary specialism based on a design-thinking management approach. The program caters for the surging global demand for “T-shaped” professionals.

The ID&BM Master in Design program is unique and the first of its kind to be offered in the Asia Pacific region. Through the programme, students will develop high-level competencies in understanding and managing global business dynamics. These competences enable students to lead the transformation of their respective local enterprises and challenge existing mindsets in technological innovation.

The curriculum of the programme pulls together professional knowledge in design, business and technology fields to practice “managing design as a competitive strategy” in an international business setting. Students will be exposed to a highly internationalized environment where they will meet fellow classmates from Hong Kong, Mainland China and overseas and form strong networks. It normally takes one year to complete the one-year full time programme.

The program will attract those who aspire to be well-balanced products-services innovators, business leaders and entrepreneurs. Applicants will be required to hold a bachelor’s degree in design, business, technological fields or other related disciplines.

Corporate leaders have shown their enthusiastic support through scholarships for local and non-local students, including Bright Future Charitable Foundation, Ming Foundation, and Wai Kin Foundation Ltd.

The new ID&BM specialism will be offered in September 2013, with Tuition fee HK$132,120. Deadline for application will be on 20 May 2013.

Public Lecture on Physiological Markers and Social Presence in Virtual Reality - Design for Experience by Miriam Reiner | Upcoming Events

Synopsis of the lecture
What determines the effect of the experience in virtual reality? What would be a valid measure of the level of the personal experience, beyond words and questionnaires?
The talk will focus on three topics: how multisensory integration can be used to create the illusion of being “present” in a remote location; what are the crucial cues for social presence and interaction in a virtual world; and mutual resonance between a VR and the self for enhanced cognitive skills – applications of Brain Computer interfaces (BCI). Two types of BCI will be described: training for control of brain activations, with several examples; BCI based on brain potentials correlated with errors with the environment. Conclusion will relate the above results to a smart environment which designs itself to stimulate and enhance the human skills and performance.

About Miriam Reiner
Miriam Reiner is a Professor at the Technion and currently a visiting Professor at Stanford. She is the head of the Virtual Reality and NeuroCognition Lab in the Technion—Israel Institute of Technology, and heads the Physics Education program. She has been active in the European Union research authorities and was granted several major projects on remote presence.

Global design is a recent phenomenon that can be understood as design targeted at a global audience, which aims to be exhibited and consumed by different cultures. Hence, a key question is: how can designers globalize design in an ethical manner without giving rise to breakdowns in communication and threatening cultural diversity? Although some authors argue that it is just not possible to globalize visual communication, it is improbable that globalization and global design will vanish. Therefore, we are not facing a question of whether or not to produce global design, but of how we should carry out global design in a professional and ethical manner. Overall, this paper advances a conceptual understanding of global design and the different forms and categories it embodies: standard, multicultural and localisation. Finally, it concludes by suggesting possible approaches communication designers might pursue in acting globally, aiming to define future directions for more professional and ethical global graphic design practice.

About Susana Barreto
Susana Barreto is a design educator and researcher. Having worked and lived in London and Macau for fifteen years, Susana is now living in Porto where she holds a position at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Porto where she is a Deputy Course Director of the PhD in Design, which has been Granted Excellence Status by The Foundation for Science and Technology fct.pt. Susana is also a Research Associate at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts, London where she gained her PhD and Postdoc. In 2012 Susana has been appointed a member of the evaluation panel of the Grants and Fellowships of design, urbanism and architecture for the National Foundation for Science and Technology.
Susana's research interests are focused around the role of culture in graphic communication, cross-cultural design, image globalization, visual methods and design ethics.

Architect MAA/RIBA, Kim H. Nielsen (born 1954) is Founder and Principal of 3XN. Since the start of the company in 1986, Kim H. Nielsen has been the creative driving force behind 3XN. He functions as the creative director and has overall responsibility for the architectural quality of 3XN’s work from the idea to the final result. Working closely with the Competition Department, Kim directs the group with a high degree of personal involvement in each project. Kim Herforth Nielsen has been involved in all of the practice’s major projects, including the Copenhagen Arena, the aquarium The Blue Planet, Museum of Liverpool, Ørestad College in Copenhagen, Muziekgebouw Concert Hall in Amsterdam, and the Danish Embassy in Berlin.
Kim H. Nielsen is often called upon as a jury member in International architectural competitions and as a lecturer at art academies and universitiesaround the world. Kim H. Nielsen will be one of the lecturer’s at this year’s upcoming Hong Kong Business of Design Week in December 2012.

Synopsis of the lecture
Latitude 22N has been working for the past five years between cosmopolitan Hong Kong and

and local craft versus global culture, mass production and technology.

About Latitude 22N
Latitude 22N is a Hong Kong based design studio co-founded by Jesse Mc Lin and Julie Progin.
Since it’s inception in 2008, the studio has developed their own collections of contemporary
porcelain tableware, accessories, lighting and furniture for their label Latitude 22N as well as more
experimental, limited edition designs exploring the fine lines between art and design and the
territory of industrial and craft processes for their label Julie&Jesse. Their work has received HK
design for Asia Award, is being represented by international design galleries and retailers around
the world and will be exhibited this year in Korea, Milan and Paris.
