SD5404 Design and Make Capstone Project

Mystory Chine
by Yoki Li
Tutor: Roger Ball

Mystory Chine introduces Asian beauty ideas and aims to improve the quality, service and branding of Chinese skin care products. Today, Chinese women tend to choose western cosmetic brands over local Chinese ones. Yoki therefore conducted interviews with female users and researched into Asian skin care products, e.g. India’s natural herbs and Japanese’s traditional skin care elements and methods. From the capstone research to the brainstorming, she realized, in order to create a distinguished local brand among so many international skin care brands, one way is to innovate through the use of new technologies to refine the Chinese traditional skin care methods.

Mystory Chine’s experience begins with a-one-on-one skin care consultation with customer which pays attention to how different areas of skin respond to the change of season and age.  Within Mystory Chine’s interactive website, customer is able to create rendering of her face, make adjustment to their mask and preview the personalized outcome easily. Customization of facial masks (cutting, size and materials) and ingredients (for different areas, seasons and personal skill solutions) will tackle clients’ individual needs. For different plants bloom in different seasons, Mystory Chine believes that, by matching the mask with plants blooms in season as the main ingredient, one can reap the full benefits of the mask applied. The plants in seasons are Orchid for Spring, Bamboo for Summer, Chrysanthemum for Autumn, and Plum Blossom for Winter. Extended support from website as a database and platform, customers can check their own skin care history and be connected to related community and experts for advice.

Save the Street Market: Central Kitchen, HK
by Jewel Keung
Tutor: Roger Ball

Because of Hong Kong's urban renewal plan, the oldest street market which has been in Central since 1841 is now under-threat.

While government is looking at the potential profit could be mad by rebuilding this area, Jewel Keung is working on a larger space where both the historic street hawkers and some of the best good suppliers and restaurants are included.

Her project seeks to create a food-themed local-global brand - Central Kitchen, HK. It offers both the local residents and tourists a "Beyond Food" experience in which the participants can see the living history of the local street culture, enjoy some of the best local food and share their experience with others.

The final aim of this project is to illustrate a larger business potential can be brought by branding this region into a big attraction rather than replacing it with concert office tower and save the original sense of the street culture and identities here in Hong Kong's central area.

SD5301 - Strategies: Final Report

Tutors: Various

The MDes Strategies course ends with a final paper SD5301. The student can choose and develop the topic under faculty guidance. The goal of the paper is to reflect on the student’s professional background, what they have learned in the programme, and a broader understanding of design in relation to some topic.

Students select a topic of interest that connects their professional experience and interests with the information and experience they gained during their master study. The goal is to combine research, reflection, and experience in order to obtain fresh understanding and insight on some problem or opportunity. The reports are diverse and demonstrate the range of student background and concern.

The following papers offer a glimpse into the concerns of the students in this programme as revealed by their final papers.

SD5525 - Interaction Design Workshop II

Tutors: Sharon Poggenpohl and Xin Xiangyang

Crossing cultural boundaries in travel is both exciting and frustrating. This is especially true for independent tourists who wish to experience a culture but often face language, culture, and travel arrangement difficulties. Our user for this project is an adult traveling alone or with another person, or a small self-organizing group. They do not know the language of the culture they are visiting, but they are on their own. Two team projects are presented: Fringe i and Trippie.

Fringe I - A Tourist Aid for Young Travelers in a self-organizing group
Team: Manfred, AU Man Fung, CK, HE Zijian, Janice, LEUNG Nga Ting, Cicely, LU Yi

Fringe i facilitates group formation (communication and wayfinding) so individuals in the group can take on specific roles (transportation arranger, food finder, etc.), or after individuals go off on their own assist them to rejoin the group. The device supports immediate sharing of individual experience through sound, image or video, and can be worn in different ways for accessible use. A touch sensitive screen supports map, GPS, image functions; an ear bud supports conversation. File sharing is enabled through easy, tangible interaction between users. Project focus is on group interaction.

Trippie
Team: Rico CHAN, Carrie, LEUNG Wing Sze, Dominic, LEUNG Yu Hang, Ted, LI YuHang

Trippie is a network-based system that consists of digital files and an object that helps travelers before, during, and after travel with their practical travel needs. Individuals register on a website indicating their preferences and share their travel knowledge and experience. The website is a source of information—a repository of personal and collective travel images and experience. Trippie (software) can be downloaded to various existing devices or can be rented to a custom device prior to travel at airports. It has GPS, translation, messaging, and image management. Project focus is on system, interface, and interaction.

SD5523 Embedded Information Spaces Workshop

Tutors: Catherine Hu and Michael Fox

The aims of this course are to develop the skills necessary to explore, think about, and design intelligently responsive kinetic objects, systems, and spaces. The primary goal of the course is to expose students to innovative ways of thinking about design in terms of adaptability with respect to both contextual systems and building programming. The idea is to create spaces and objects that can physically reconfigure themselves to meet changing needs. The central issues explored are human and environmental interaction, embedded computational infrastructures, physical control mechanisms and the processes that architects and designers can use in creating and demonstrating such systems. Within the framework of this course, design processes and methodologies are developed so that students will have the practical confidence to explore such systems in future design explorations.
