Next on the Series was Ms Kimberly Elam, Head of the Graphic and Interactive Communication Department at the Ringling School of Art and Design, Sarasota, Florida. Kimberly gave an enlightening and inspiring lecture to over 160 students, design practitioners, faculty and alumni at the SD's Courtyard in the evening of 3 April. The lecture's topic was "Inspiration and Typographic Systems", covering typographic systems which are akin to what architects term "shape grammars". According to Kimberly, through shape grammars, styles are identified via rule-based compositional systems and the grammars are employed for both historic analysis of style and for design.
