An Other Everyday - HK Souvenirs from Japan
Tokyo-iori, ohaio gozaimasss.
In May 2010 a Group of 26 PolyU Design BA (Hons) Industrial & Product Design Yr2 Students embarked on a study tour of Japan.
These first-time out-of-Hong Kong travelers came back with memories full of the country’s images, colours and shapes; its characters, past and present, traditional and (post)modern, real and mythical; its foods, objects, codes and vernacular rites… visions of the everyday which inspired souvenir designs - ones they would have loved to find there, and bring back over here for keeps or gifts.
So how does the Other live its everyday? As Japan exposes its own blend of cultural influences, this group of Hong Kong visitors proposes its interpretations thereof.
From homeware to playware, through food, incense and jewellery, and the all important packaging, this exhibition showcases a multisensory display of things Elsewhere through a two-way mirror of playful identification.
