The Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Design (PolyU Design) is hosting the “Pimp My Push Cart Workshop” at the DETOUR 2009 at the Former Police Married Quarters, Central, from 23–27 November.
The ubiquitous push cart is an iconic symbol of Hong Kong. Used every day by thousands of workers these carts ferry the goods and garbage of everyday life through the steep narrow streets of Hong Kong. This workshop challenges student teams to “pimp” a Hong Kong push cart. The challenge of “Pimping” challenges is to transform the lowly push cart into an extravagant, one of a kind, traffic stopping statement.
Students from the PolyU Design have created innovative micro solutions to Hong Kong lifestyle opportunities. The “100 Meter Taxi” cart provides short rides through crowded areas that regular taxis can’t fit. “The City Surfer” cart allows anyone to surf the streets of Central. “The Pink Pony” cart allows a city equestrian experience for parents who can’t afford a real horse for their spoiled princess.” The Dim Sum on the Run” cart allows Hong Kongers to indulge in their favourite pastime, eating, anywhere anytime. “The Bubbles” cart allows busy Hong Kongers to grab a bath on their way to work. The “Cute and Creepy” cart turns a baby pram into a disturbing horror show on wheels. The “Monster Truck” cart transforms a regular pushcart into a car crushing monster.
