Project 2: Hong Kong Fantasies: Assembling Inner worlds, the Landscapes of Collection,Collage, Juxtaposition and Compositing.
As a second component to the ‘photo documentation process’ of this semester, the focus in the second project shifts to photography as tool for visualization and explorations of concepts. Seen from the various definitions of collage, assemblage and juxtaposition, photography opens possibilities to explore new avenues by way of ‘photomontage’. Photomontage is seen as the editing, pasting, cutting, cropping and overlapping of images, also known as ‘composting’ / photoshopping, through a number of assemblages, fusing together existing images to form ‘unordinary’ and imaginary images. It is within this ‘fusing together’, that the lines between reality and imaginary are blurred, resulting in the questioning of aesthetic appeal and ethical application, that is to say, what is real and is a ethically valid to show or portray in this particular manner, or, is this in fact a ‘real’ image?
History has demonstrated the popularity of photomontage in Victorian and Edwardian period, producing a number of postcards reflective of the ‘moral society’. Examples from Hungary during the First World War showed a more human side of life with the depiction of husbands, wives, lovers and families within its specific scenes to remind soldiers of their loved ones, motivating them for the battlefield. In most instances the techniques where less advanced as cards consisted out of mounting photographic images on water color background, Later this very form of card production intersected into the fine art movement of Dadaism at the beginning 1900’s. Examples clearly show the link to surreal fantasies and the production of a specific aesthetics, within the art forms, bring into existence a new, deeper and more psychological world associated to image. We are therefore left to question, how collage, juxta positioning and photomontage related to designer activities is and can any of these be used to rethink possible futures for spatial design. How can any of these aspects be a beneficial tool for the designer and his way of both seeing and reformulating the spatial world.
Aims and focus:
The aims of project 2 are to use the collected architectural and spatial elements documented in the 10 A3 images of project 1, into a TWO photo fantasies / collages. The challenge would be to combine mix conflict and overlay unusual combination of elements with each other, whilst placing these back into ONE of the already documented spaces.
The structural elements of project 1 [roofs, walls, windows, doors, stairs, ceilings, balustrades, ramps, facades, service ducts, pedestrian and vehicular bridges and other large, medium and small scale structures] are to be the focus of the new assemblage. To clarify, students are allowed to use one of their images as setting before inserting the other elements, forming a new space and elemental composition.
