Studio Exhibition (10/F): Miaoxia Village Community Guesthouse 2017

Following the construction of the Miaoxia Community Kitchen in 2015, many visitors have come to the village to explore the possibility of community development work. The village public facilities presently cannot meet the needs of these visitors, therefore the community run (as a social enterprise) Guesthouse will help this. The project renovates an existing house and constructs a new extension that includes 5 bedrooms that accommodates up to 18 people, a hall, an office space, a tea room, a activity space and bathroom amenities in a total of 250m2. The new extension forms an L-shaped courtyard garden which will have orchard trees fertilized by the treated wastewater from the Guesthouse. We use this opportunity to explore low technology sustainable systems and the proposed community septic tank can treat a number of surrounding houses in the future, thereby helping to protect the traditional village patterns of life whilst improving the environment and addressing the need for basic amenities. The participatory design started in April 2017 with completion of the first stage of the Guest house expected by November 2017, construction started in August and the frame was completed on August 7th. The project uses conventional timber frame construction but explores the adaptability of the timber frame system as an innovation that allows for new structures, spaces and relationships. This is shown through the roof structure and spaces formed diagonally, keeping a modest profile to the old courtyard and a more open profile to the public square spaces.
