Susan Greenfield is a research neuroscientist at Oxford University, writer, broadcaster and member of the British House of Lords. She has characterized consciousness as continuously variable:  the degree of consciousness at any one time will, she argues, be determined by the extent of large scale, sub-second transient coalitions of neurons (‘assemblies’).
